SUN CITY WOMEN’S GOLF ASSOCIATION TEAM PLAY RULES
November 2022 - March 2023
SUN CITY WOMEN’S GOLF ASSOCIATION TEAM PLAY
REVISED November 2021 (Rev’d October 2022)
RULES AND REGULATIONS:
1) Play will be as scheduled beginning the month of November per the revised schedule provided at the beginning of each season (refer to the current schedule). Each player will pay $2.00 to the Pro-Shop, the money to be accumulated and paid out to the participants at the end of the year at the rate of $2.00 for each match Gross and Net won and $1.00 for ties. If a shortage occurs in the sweeps money, it is the Host Team’s responsibility to make up the deficit.
2) Team Composition: Team Play is composed of three divisions: “A”,”B” and “C”. Players must represent their home course where State Dues are paid. The teams in each division will be composed of the five (5) lowest USGA handicap index players who wish to participate, plus a sixth (6), seventh (7th) and eight (8th) to be selected from among the remaining higher index players available. If necessary to complete a team in any category, the captain may select players with higher handicaps who must play to the maximum in the category. She should take the lowest handicap person on the next lower team. If the selected player refuses, she will be ineligible to play that week. Handicaps dated 7 days prior to team play or as stated on the schedule, will be used.
Addendum 10-21-15: As per discussion at the SCWGA (Umbrella) Meeting on October 21, 2015; in the event a Sun City Club member transfers her membership from one club to another, the players is eligible for Team Play at the new club as of the date of “transfer” to the new club on the club GHIN System. If the players handicap is not reflected at the new club until the revision date following their transfer, and the previous revision handicap is needed for the next schedule team play, then the new Handicap Chair will contact the Handicap Chair at the former club and determine the players handicap on the previous revision date. This will also apply to a new member transferring from a club outside of Sun City. Member transferring must tell the Handicap Chair they are leaving and going to a new club.
Addendum 11-17-21: Any brand new member with an established handicap on GHIN will be eligible for play as soon as member has been added to a clubs roster. New member can show handicap on 1st or 15th of the month on their GHIN record.
3) The “A” players are eligible to play to a maximum index of 20.4; “B” players are eligible to a minimum USGA index of 20.5 and a maximum index of 27.5; “C” players are eligible to play with a minimum USGA index of 26.6 and a maximum index of 36.0. Player’s handicap index will be sloped to the course they are assigned to play.
4) USGA Match Play Rules apply unless modified by local rules in effect at the course played. All local rules should be prominently posted or some other means used to assure that all team players are made aware of such rules. If a player is out of contention, she should pick up her ball and record the score (marking it with an X) she most likely would have made if the hole had been completed. A conceded putt is in the hole as if it was putted in. Do not enter with an X. Competition: Partner’s Best Ball and Four-Ball Match Play. (Rule 30.3). You may use your GPS system as approved by the USGA (for distance only). Any player may ask for the distance and you should provide it according to USGA rules.
5) (a) SCORING Point system: GROSS and/or NET Hole won = 1 point for the winning side. Hole tied = ½ point each side. Hole lost = 0 point losing side. 36 total points for each 18-hole round. (Exception: see paragraphs 11 & 12 )
(b) STROKES: Low handicap players for the foursome plays at scratch. Allow the other three players 100% of the difference, taking the strokes where they fall on the scorecard, starting with handicap hole #1. All handicaps will be figured off the slope. In the event the last minute line-up changes when the team captain is not available, teams will be expected to adjust scorecards accordingly, putting a note on the card explaining the changes. If the low handicapper cancels and her replacement has a higher handicap, all handicap strokes will be adjusted to reflect the new low handicapper. Each player’s handicap index should appear on the scorecard along with her converted handicap. The player is responsible for assuring that her handicap index, the converted handicap and the strokes she receives are correct. She is also responsible for assuring that her hole-by-hole scores recorded on the card are correct and the card signed. If a card has been prepared showing strokes holed incorrectly, players should call it to the attention of her group, make the correction, put a note on the card, and turn it into the captain.
(c) SCHEDULE: Each team will play one time at home and one time at the opposing team’s home course. Each course has two (2) byes during the season. Preparation of the schedule is the responsibility of the Team Play Coordinators with the approval of the Pro-Shop Manager. (When preparing the Team Play in March, scheduling during the LPGA event in Phoenix should be avoided if possible.) In the event of an incomplete match, due to weather or other unavoidable event, rain dates have been scheduled.
(d) TEE TIMES: There will be six (6) tee times each on the front and back nines. Team Play will be played at the first six tee times available before the crossover on both the first and tenth tees, in Nov, Feb & March beginning at 8:52 am. Because the time of the crossover changes in Dec & Jan, team play tee times are required to be changed to begin at 9:22 am. Tee times will be rotated among teams as noted on the schedule.
6) The guest team has the honors on the first tee, thereafter, honors will go to the previous Gross team winner, unless due to conditions, players may agree on “ready golf” for a particular tee.
7) Prepaid memberships will be recognized at all five courses. If a player does not have a prepaid membership, she will pay green fees.
8) All signed, attested score cards for each flight should be neatly organized with their respective Flight’s (A, B, C) completed lineup scoring sheets. Each League’s A captain (or representative) will deliver to Team Coordinator at designated location. Scores will be posted without a “T”. It is recommended that each course have one person post all of their team scores.
9) All players must take golf carts -- 2 players per cart unless certain conditions require 1 player to ride single -- Maximum of 3 golf carts per foursome. No pull carts will be permitted. Exception: If golf carts are required to stay on the cart path only, then pull carts will be allowed.
10) There will be a traveling trophy awarded to each of the overall winners--Gross and Net, to be awarded at FUN DAY, which will be held each year at two Sun City Courses. The details of Fun Day will be posted at each course prior to the event.
11) In the event of team disqualification, the disqualified team will receive no points and the opposing team will receive the points they actually earned. For example, if Team X wins 10 points and Team Y wins 8 points, and Y is subsequently disqualified, Team X will receive 10 points and Team Y none. Disqualification of one member of a team does not disqualify the entire team. Cause of disqualification would be playing under the wrong handicap and/or any infraction with penalty of disqualification as described in the official USGA Rule Book.
12) If a team is forced to forfeit, the point distribution will be no points for the forfeiting team and 36 for the opposing team.
13) Rescheduling should be kept to a minimum. It should only occur when the entire team is affected, and will be coordinated by the Umbrella Pres Elect (see detailed procedure “Team Play Re-schedule Procedure”.) If match is rescheduled, use the handicaps currently in effect at the time the match is played.
14) NOTE: Any issues involving a player during team play should be referred to the player’s
Home course board members for resolution.
